Penikese Island Celebrates 150 Years Of Botanical Surveys | The Enterprise

The Meigs Room at the Marine Biological Laboratory was full on July 16 for a celebration of 150 years of botanical surveys being conducted on Penikese Island. The event, hosted by the Penikese Island School, also served as a celebration of the school’s evolving mission and the legacy of scientific discovery on the island.
Attendees, some dressed in on-theme, floral-printed outfits, viewed preserved plant specimens from the Marine Biological Laboratory/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Library herbarium, featuring plants collected on Penikese Island, along with a slideshow highlighting the work of the Penikese Island School. The exhibit also included historical photos from the Anderson School of Natural History, which operated on the island in 1873 and 1874 and laid the groundwork for what would become the Marine Biological Laboratory. .
